Poyle Road: Experimental Northbound Width Restriction and Bus Gate Consultation

A consultation has opened today (Monday 2 Dec) to gather views on a new scheme in Colnbrook.

For years, the council has received feedback around HGV issues on Poyle Road and Bath Road (Colnbrook). The main traffic-related issues are the perceived speed and volume of HGVs passing through the residential area along Bath Road.

The design is to introduce an experimental northbound width restriction and bus gate on Poyle Road (south of Mathisen Way).

The scheme will be delivered through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) that will introduce a northbound width restriction, a bus gate northbound, new signage and an unrestricted southbound carriageway for all vehicles, including HGVs.

HGV traffic would be able to enter the industrial estate via Bath Road and would have to exit via Horton Road.

The ETRO will be in place for no longer than 18 months, with the consultation exercise undertaken in the first six months.

The Poyle Road Width Restriction and Bus Gate Scheme aims to:

•    divert HGVs to roads more suitable for their needs
•    reduce issues currently experienced in the layby south of Mathisen Way
•    ensure bus routes and journey times are not impacted
•    improve road safety in the area
•    ensure businesses and their operations are not affected
•    improve air quality and reduce congestion, carbon emissions, and noise pollution by minimising HGV movements through predominantly residential areas.

A previous consultation on a similar scheme was undertaken in 2016, but the bus gate was never implemented because of objections.

Councillor Paul Kelly, lead member for housing, highways, planning and transport, said: “Tackling this issue feeds back to several of our council policies, including our low emission strategy and local transport plan. We have implemented this experimental scheme after complaints about HGVs and other traffic issues.

“We always want to hear the views of residents, commuters, businesses and stakeholders. Please give your feedback over the next few months as you get a feel for how it is affecting you and traffic in the area. We can then measure the impact of the experimental scheme.”

Work started on site on 18 November.

You can respond to the consultation online, by email, by post, or by phone.

You can visit Observatory House, 25 Windsor Road, to view a larger copy of the plan or to pick up a leaflet about the consultation, or pick up a leaflet from Colnbrook Village Hall, Vicarage Way, SL3 0RF during their opening hours.

All feedback will be collated during the trial period and the results used to decide whether to implement the experimental changes permanently.

The consultation closes on 30 June 2025.
