Prioritising heart health for a stronger future

As part of Heart Month, Slough Borough Council is encouraging all residents to prioritise the health of their hearts by making simple but impactful lifestyle changes.

With approximately 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK for heart failure annually, heart disease remains one of the leading causes of ill health and premature death. The good news is that many of the risk factors that contribute to heart disease can be prevented or managed through healthier choices.

Small changes, such as improving diet, increasing physical activity, reducing smoking, and managing stress, can have a significant impact on heart health and help reduce the risks linked to heart disease.

Maintaining a healthy heart is essential not only for your physical wellbeing, but for overall quality of life. During Heart Month, we are raising awareness about the benefits of a heart-healthy lifestyle, which include improved energy levels, better mood, and reduced risk of chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

Key benefits of looking after your heart include:

  • Increased energy: Regular physical activity strengthens the heart, allowing it to pump blood more efficiently, leading to improved stamina and energy throughout the day.
  • Better mental health: Exercise and a balanced diet contribute to better mood and reduced anxiety, promoting mental wellbeing.
  • Longer life expectancy: By managing risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight, you can reduce the risk of heart disease and live a longer, healthier life.
  • Prevention of chronic conditions: A heart-healthy lifestyle helps prevent or manage conditions like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, which are linked to cardiovascular health.
  • Stronger immune system: A healthy heart supports a robust immune system, helping your body fight off illnesses more effectively.
  • Throughout Heart Month 2025, Slough Borough Council will be providing resources and support including Free NHS Health Checks, access to fitness programmes and nutrition workshops via our delivery partner, Health and Wellbeing Slough.

  • Thursdays (9.30am – 5.30pm): Asda Superstore Cippenham

  • eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins
  • quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption
  • managing stress through relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and regular sleep patterns
  • getting a free NHS Health Check to get a picture of your overall health
  • checking your heart health age using the NHS Heart Age calculator.
  • Councillor Ishrat Shah, lead member for equalities, public health, and public protection, said: “Pop down to one of the locations across the borough during Heart Month to access free NHS Health Checks and lots more information on improving your heart health.
